Light and Thread installations by Jeongmoon Choi

Berlin-based Korean artist Jeongmoon Choi redefines a space with her incredibly eye-catching light and thread installations. Her light drawings and thread installations each offer a three-dimensional sense of architectural perspective, as though the viewers themselves have entered the virtual blueprint of a room within a room. The pieces reflect both architecture and drawing in contemporary art, featuring the most common figure—the line—at the forefront.

All of Choi’s spacial constructs allow audiences to roam within the rooms illuminated by spectacular UV lights. Many of the artist’s works project abstract forms, creating an illusionary geometric matrix of woven string that stretch across the expanse of the exhibition site. The installations create a visual playground filled with colors, shapes, and an immeasurable liveliness for visitors to get lost in. A collection of Choi’s work is currently showing as part of her solo exhibition titled Dialogue Lineairein Paris at Galerie Laurent Mueller through January 26, 2013.

Submergence Installation by Squidsoup

In this mixed media installation, visitors are invited to walk through a dazzling display of lights that challenge the natural perceptions of space. The piece includes 8,064 points of lights, suspended from the ceiling in a mind-boggling construction. Entitled Submergence, the piece was developed by collaborative group Squidsoup, which consists of international artists, researchers, and designers who create work that “combines sound, physical space, and virtual worlds to produce immersive and emotive headspaces where participants can take active control of their experience.”

Specifically within Squidsoup, artists Anthony Rowe, Gareth Bushell, Chris Bennewith, Liam Birtles, and Ollie Bown designed the piece in what they describe as “the culmination of a five year research project exploring interactive media experiences that occupy physical space.” At first glance, the stagnant light seems harmless. However, as visitors pass through the floating strings of bulbs, the glowing lights begin to go crazy in patterns of flickering, energetic, and moving illumination, paired with an electronic soundtrack that will take viewers to a different dimension.

Squidsoup has a sneak preview video, below, where you can virtually experience being consumed by a glowing sense of infinity. If you want to have this awesome experience in person, the futuristic design will be on exhibit at ROM, located in Oslo, Norway, from now through February 17, 2013.

85,794 Rubik's Cubes

Cube Works Studio is best known for their toy-based artwork, particularly the pieces in which they twist Rubik’s cubes and organize them into pixelated portraits and landscapes. In the past few years, the small Toronto-based collaborative set two unique Guinness World Records by creating the world’s largest Rubik’s Cube mosaics, first The Last Supper (+4,000 cubes) in 2010 and then The Hand of God (+12,000 cubes) in 2011.

Most recently, the team set a new record by exceeding all of their past feats. They constructed this Macau Mural, which stands over 13 feet high and 200 feet wide and uses 85,794 Rubik’s Cubes to form the skyline of Macau, China. Across the course of a few months, the graphic designers sketched out the plan, twisted the cubes, and installed the completed mural at the Macau waterfront. Creative Director Josh Chalom says, “Our works are meant to inspire, unite and invoke a sense of nostalgia by using common, tangible objects and methods to create impressive and entertaining works of art that can be appreciated and enjoyed by all.”

Check out the really great time-lapse video, below, that shows the installation of the completed mural. It’s great fun to see how the piece comes together, cube by cube!
